Technical Assistance to Strengthen Marine Litter Prevention Efforts in the Mediterranean Region – Sep 30, 2025

As part of the EU-funded Marine Litter MED PLUS Project (2024–2027), coordinated by UNEP/MAP, REMPEC is supporting three Mediterranean countries in enhancing port waste management and preventing marine litter for ship generated wastes. The project includes pilot initiatives such as implementing cost-effective or No-Special-Fee systems, providing adequate waste reception facilities in selected ports and marinas, and developing standardised Waste Reception and Handling Plans (WRHP).

Mission to Egypt

REMPEC recently conducted a mission to the Port of Alexandria and Marassi Marina. Hosted by the Alexandria Port Authority (APA) and supported by national consultant Ms. Nahla Hassan and Regional Consultant Mr. Guido Van Meel, the visit included technical site inspections of APA facilities and Marassi Marina, as well as a national meeting with the Egyptian competent authorities.

Supporting National and Regional action

The mission strengthened Egypt’s sustainable port waste management efforts and reinforced REMPEC’s role in promoting regional cooperation and implementing international measures. By combining technical expertise, local engagement, and international best practices, the visit translated global commitments into concrete national action for a cleaner, more sustainable Mediterranean.

REMPEC thanks all involved in the spirit of cooperation afforded and looks forward to continuing working with Egypt, to develop/improve the expected waste reception facilities in the selected port and marina which will result in improvements to the state of the marine environment in the Mediterranean.
