Regional Meeting of National Experts on the Post-2021 Mediterranean Strategy for Prevention of and Response to Marine Pollution from Ships – Mar 18, 2021

On March 10th REMPEC organised a virtual Regional Meeting of National Experts on the Post-2021 Mediterranean Strategy for Prevention of and Response to Marine Pollution from Ships. The meeting aimed to contribute to the implementation of overarching and thematic Mediterranean strategies. Representatives from 21 out of 22 Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocol, namely Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, EU, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Slovenia, Spain, Tunisia, Türkiye, as well as representatives from relevant regional and international organisations, actively participated to the meeting.

Contracting parties agreed upon a set of conclusions and recommendations and on the Draft Mediterranean Strategy for the Prevention of, and Response to Marine Pollution from Ships (2022-2031) and its Action Plan, which address the following global priorities oil and chemical pollution, Climate change, Air emission, Marine litter, Non-Indigenous Species, and Spacial planning and designation of special areas.

The implementation of the Mediterranean Strategy (2022-2031) will be governing through the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols, in collaboration and consultation with relevant national, regional and international organisations, institutions, agencies and stakeholders.

The coordination of parallel initiatives and processes will be crucial to ensure the capitalisation of past and ongoing efforts, to increase the effectiveness of the resources mobilised to meet the common objective of the Mediterranean Strategy (2022-2031).

This meeting marked an important step toward, the adoption of the Strategy and its Action to be adopted by the Twenty-second Ordinary Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols (COP 22), in December 2021, following its further review by the 14th Meeting of the Focal Point of REMPEC, by end of May 2021, and the Meeting of the Focal Points of the Mediterranean Action Plan, in September 2021.
