REMPEC in cooperation with the MOIG with the participation of the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) organised the Regional Government and Industry Workshop on Cooperation, Preparedness for and Response to Oil Spills in the Mediterranean Sea, which was held in Marseille, from 11 to 12 May 2009.  All Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention, represented by 38 delegates attended the Workshop with representatives from the Mediterranean oil industry (EGPC, Eni, ETAP, Exxon mobile, NOC, Petro-Canada, Shell/STASCO, TANKMED, Total, Marathon and Sonatrach).

The Workshop aimed at strengthening cooperation between governments and the oil industry, concluded the event with a set of recommendations for the elaboration of a joint REMPEC/MOIG short/medium and long term programme to enhance regional cooperation in the Mediterranean region.

Thanks to the contribution of IMO, the government representatives attended, from 13 to 14 May 2009, in the Parc Chanot, the 4th R&D Forum of IMO on “Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) in the marine environment” and had access to the INTERSPILL 2009 Exhibition Hall.

The Directors of REMPEC and MOIG presented respectively the “Regional Mediterranean Action plan against pollution from shipping” and “The Mediterranean Oil Industry Group MOIG”, at the INTERSPILL Conference (www.interspill.com).

The Centre Stand at the exhibition hall has been visited by a number of entities interested in the activities in the region.  It was an opportunity to share REMPEC’s work with the oil spill community.
