Preparedness for Oil-polluted Shoreline clean-up and Oiled Wildlife interventions (POSOW) Project

The project Preparedness for Oil-polluted Shoreline clean-up and Oiled Wildlife interventions (POSOW) supported the establishment of a regional cooperation synergy in the field of marine pollution through the enhancement of knowledge and capacities of professional and volunteer operators focused on civil protection services in municipalities and NGOs of the European Union Mediterranean Sea coastal countries.

In 2012-2013, the two year project POSOW I supported the establishment of a regional cooperation synergy in the field of marine pollution through the enhancement of knowledge and capacities of professional and volunteer operators working in civil protection services, in municipalities and in NGOs, in the European Union coastal countries of the Mediterranean Sea (namely: Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Slovenia and Spain). The POSOW I project grew out of collaboration between the Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale (ISPRA), Centre of Documentation, Research and Experimentation on Accidental Water Pollution (Cedre), Sea Alarm and the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR) and coordinated by REMPEC.

Achievements of POSOW I (2012-2013):

  • Development and provision of Training Material Package (4 Manuals, 11 posters and 14 presentations in 7 languages);
  • Organization of Train the Trainer Courses and National Pilot Training Courses;
  • Development and maintenance of POSOW Website;
  • Development and maintenance of database of trained volunteers as well as trainers in 9 regions of Mediterranean countries.

The extension and distribution of the results and benefits of the POSOW I project to some targeted Southern Mediterranean European Neighbourhood countries and EU candidate countries and potential candidates not participating in the Mechanism (referred as Southern Mediterranean European Neighbourhood Policy Countries and Enlargement Countries) should support the enhancement of the oil spill response preparedness level of the national civil protection in these countries, their mutual cooperation, as well as facilitate the support of the European Civil Protection Mechanism in case of request for assistance from one or more of these countries.

In this context, the POSOW II project aimed at expanding the achievements of POSOW I to these Southern Mediterranean European Neighbourhood Policy Countries and Enlargement Countries, namely: Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Türkiye. POSOW II was led by Cedre with the collaboration of the REMPEC, ISPRA, the Instituto Portuario de Estudios y Cooperacion de la Comunidad Valenciana (FEPORTS), the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), and the General Directorate of Maritime and Inland Waters (DG-MARINWA).
Achievements of POSOW II (2015-2016):
  • Development and provision of Training Material Package (2 Manuals, posters and presentations);
  • Organization of Train the Trainer Courses;
  • Maintenance of database of trained volunteers as well as trainers in 9 regions of Mediterranean countries.
